Diwali falls on 8 November this year. That is almost three weeks later than last season, and nearly every brand owner we have spoken to in the past fortnight has said some version of the same sentence. "We have time."
You do not. The date moved. The buying did not move with it. Festive shopping in India has never really started on Diwali. It starts when Navratri starts, and Navratri begins in the second week of October. Dussehra lands around the 20th. By the time the diyas come out, most of the money has already been spent or at least decided. A late Diwali gives you a longer tail, not a later start.
The Extra Three Weeks Are Not Yours
This is the part that catches people out every year. The festive calendar has a soft ending and a hard beginning, and brands keep planning as if it works the other way around.
- Three extra weeks of breathing room
- Plenty of time to sign off creative
- Book media in October, relax
- One big Diwali push should do it
- Selling starts with Navratri in October
- Rate cards and creator slots close in September
- Premium OOH sites are already fully booked
- Half the season happens before Diwali night
That last point is worth sitting with. Research from Qoruz on festive creator campaigns found Diwali accounts for 49% of festive activity. The other 51% is spread across Navratri, Durga Puja, Dussehra and Ganesh Chaturthi. If your creative only turns up for Diwali, you have quietly skipped half the season and paid peak rates for the half you did show up for.
- 8 NovDiwali 2026, close to three weeks later than last season, which stretches the tail and not the start (Agency Reporter).
- 49%of festive creator activity sits on Diwali alone. The rest happens earlier in the season (Qoruz).
- 30-40%rise in quick commerce ad rates during the festive rush as brands shift budget into delivery apps (Storyboard18).
- 15-20%festive revenue growth expected by out of home operators, with premium inventory already sold out (Agency Reporter).
Where the Festive Money Is Actually Going
Digital quietly crossed a line this year. It now takes more than half of festive media budgets, up from roughly 45% the season before (Agency Reporter). Festive creator spend alone is projected to touch Rs 900 crore in 2026, a jump of about 29% over the Rs 700 crore spent last year, with around 7,200 brands taking part. Nano and micro creators make up 75% of that mix, and tier 2 and tier 3 markets take 38% of the activity (Qoruz).
Retail media, which is the sponsored space inside marketplaces and delivery apps, is forecast to reach Rs 30,360 crore in 2026 and grow 25% (WPP Media). And in the 35 day window before Diwali last year, e-commerce clocked roughly Rs 1.15 lakh crore in sales, with close to 90 million shoppers in the first 11 days spending nearly Rs 7,000 each.
Notice what all of those channels have in common. They eat creative. Not one big film. Dozens of small, correctly sized, correctly timed pieces. Vertical video for reels. Square tiles for quick commerce. Wide banners for the marketplace. A landing page that does not look like a different company built it. This is what quietly breaks festive campaigns, and it is a production problem long before it becomes a media problem.
Festive campaigns rarely fail on strategy. They fail on the fourteenth asset nobody remembered to make. The real reason October gets stressful
The Six Week Sprint, Week by Week
Start the week of 8 September and you finish around 19 October. That puts everything live just as Navratri traffic builds, with three clear weeks to optimise before the Dhanteras to Diwali peak. Here is how we would run it.
- Week 1: Lock one idea, not a mood board. One line a shopper could repeat to a friend. If it needs a paragraph to explain, it will not survive a six second reel. Kill the second and third options now, because otherwise they come back in week four and cost you a fortnight.
- Week 2: Build a festive kit, do not rebrand. A seasonal colour extension, one festive lockup, one motif, a type treatment and three layout templates. Your logo stays as it is. Brands that redesign their identity in September spend the whole season explaining themselves instead of selling.
- Week 3: Shoot and design the key visual. One hero idea, built in five crops from the very start. Vertical, square, wide, story and a print size. Designing the wide version first and squashing it later is how brands end up with a logo sitting on someone's face.
- Week 4: Motion and vertical video. Six to nine second cuts that read with the sound off, product visible inside the first two seconds, captions burned in. Build one master edit with swappable end cards so you can ship ten variants without ten edits.
- Week 5: Landing page, tiles and listings. Festive landing page, quick commerce tiles, marketplace listing images and refreshed product schema. Test the page on a mid range phone on mobile data, not on your studio wifi. That is the device your customer is holding.
- Week 6: Creators, sequencing and buffer. Brief creators with the kit, lock media, and hold back roughly 20% of budget and creative time for whatever the season throws at you. Something always breaks in week seven. Plan for it in week six.
Six weeks is enough, if you start this one
We build festive kits, key visuals, vertical video and quick commerce assets as one system, so everything ships together and looks like it came from the same brand.
Plan your festive sprint
What to Make, and What to Skip
When a festive campaign runs late, it is almost never because the idea was slow. It is because nobody counted the files. Here is the honest split for a brand selling online in India this season.
Worth the six weeks
- A festive kit your whole team can use
- One key visual in five crops
- Three to five short vertical videos
- Quick commerce and marketplace tiles
- A fast festive landing page
- A festive sleeve or pack upgrade
- A WhatsApp and email set for your own list
Skip it this year
- A full rebrand in September
- One long hero film nobody finishes
- Three competing campaign ideas
- Custom art for every single channel
- A microsite that leaves your main domain
- Elaborate packaging that delays dispatch
- Discount led creative with no brand in it
One small habit saves an entire week. Name every file the same way from day one, by format, placement and version. When you are pushing forty assets in October, a naming convention is the difference between a calm launch and a Sunday night spent on the phone.
One Honest Note
A festive sprint is not right for every brand, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.
WPP Media flagged something worth pausing on. Last festive season was exceptionally strong on paper, with retail sales crossing Rs 6 lakh crore, but bargain hunting and buy now pay later usage both rose. That is a K shaped market, where volume grows while margin quietly thins. If your only festive idea is a bigger discount, you are buying attention you will not keep in December.
There is a second trap. Festive traffic is borrowed traffic. If your website is slow, your product pages are thin, or your checkout drops people on mobile, festive spend does not fix any of that. It simply pushes more people through a leaking bucket, faster, at the most expensive rates of the year. Fix the basics first. And while you are there, it is worth understanding why ranking on Google isn't enough anymore, because a growing share of festive research now happens inside AI answers rather than search results.
If you are a smaller brand, also consider not fighting for Diwali at all. Nearly half of festive creator money crowds onto that one moment. Owning Navratri, or a regional festival, or the quiet week straight after Diwali when everyone else has gone home, is often a far better use of a modest budget.
The Late Date Is a Trick, Not a Gift
It feels like breathing room and it behaves like a deadline. The selling season still opens in mid October, the inventory is being booked right now, and the brands that will look effortless in November are the ones sitting down this week, picking one idea, and refusing to add a second.
Six weeks is genuinely enough time to build a festive system that looks considered rather than assembled. It is not enough time if you start in the third week of October.
